Default Carving a Staff, Split Wood vs. Round vs. Sawed

Hi!
I'm thinking of splitting a tupelo board to use for carving a walking staff. I know lots of Folks carve them out of round limbs, but that's not what I have on hand. From your experience and wisdom, would it be better to split out a staff to carve, or rip a piece on the table saw? The board is just over an inch thick, clear, dry and unplaned. I thought it might look more "natural", flow more, if I split it. Any thoughts? It's 1+ x 8 x 72, give or take.

Riven or split wood is stronger that ripped, as the wood fibers are not severed where the grain bends. The splits actually follow the grain. You'll not have the same grain patterns as ripped timber, though

I think it would be just a mater of choice Wade. I agree with Al as the wood ripped can bring up a few issues of the grain running out to the edge, but it's a strong wood so should be wonderful either way.
