Default carving a small bowl

Hi Folks, I'm trying to carve a small bowl from a mahogany left over. I'm having trouble with tear out as I start going against the grain. Like at the bottom of the bowl. I don't have a curved knife so I'm trying to carve with my regular gouges. I have one spoon gouge that seems to help but still has some tear out. I wanted it to show the tool marks but not tear out. I could sand the inside and leave the tool marks on the outside.
Any suggestions on how to avoid the tear out without a special tool?

Best,
Tom in NC

Default Re: carving a small bowl

Tom,
My second relief carving ever was in mahogany. Boy did I learn the hard way. The grain seems to change direction every few inches. I had to work small areas at a time when doing background and my tools has to be super sharp.
never had to sand as the wood appeared burnished after carving.
