Kevin, Click on my Dayton show pics link. when you get too Picasa, click on the 2009 show album. There is a pic in the album with Beatle Baily caricatures and a jeep. latter in the album there are pics of different types of vehicles, like tractors motorcycles and more. I hope this helps. Carl

Kevin. For my attempted second carving I tried to do a Ford T Model fire truck. I gave up when I found I had difficulty in deciding if it should be caricature or a copy. In the end the way it was developing it was going to be neither,. I could make a model T Model, I have made four but the time it was taking me even to get started on carving one was nightmarish for me. All the time I was putting into it and going nowhere I could possibly have built two large model trucks. I have it sitting on my bench, waiting to see how I would do it differently . But it will not be this T Model it would have to be something else. I look forward to seeing how you go about it. At the time I was doing it though I had some self imposed restraints on me like what rules does carving have, can you move outside the rules, are you allowed to be inventive to overcome some problems. This is what beat me in the end. Having moved on a few months, some, but not all those restraints have been removed. Keep us posted on your journey. You are not alone. Pete |

Carl. I had a look at the 2009 show and in particular the Tractor, Dump Truck etc plus what looks like a T Model Ford. Behind the tractor is a Bus if I am correct. Now, this explains the difficulties I had which I outlined in my post. The heading says it is a woodcarving show. If it was a woodcarving and Craft Show I would understand, but unless I am wrong it is for woodcarvings only. Now, all of those items I have listed, no way could I say they have been hand carved, as great as they are they are two picture perfect, The wheels on the Tractor look rubber, the spokes look plastic, to me it looks like the wheels were purchased and added. Nothing wrong with that, but it was a woodcarving show. The T Model fenders look like they have been cut from a bandsaw and then routed and sanded., The dump truck etc has had all the parts sawn to size and assembled, very little carving. If I am wrong, and they were actually carved my hat goes off to the guy because he has just put Mr Saw and Thicknesser into retirement. Forgive me for being so forthright, as beautiful as that work is, is it carving. If you take what I have said in my original post, I hope you understand where I am coming from. Heck, you might even get me over this beginner's mind bump in front of me because that is what stopped me from completing my T Model Fire Truck. Pete |

Hello Pete, I will try to answer ur questions. The Dayton Show has more than carving. Part of the show is a wood working section. In my mind I would say artsy style furniture. One example small tables with inlays. The tires on that John Deere tractor were wood as far as I know. I studied them in person. In that pic in the back ground you can see half of the tire in wood. As far as I know all the parts you see on those vehicles were wood. But I'm not 100% sure. If you have any more questions I would be glad too try and answer. Carl

Carl. I think you have answered my question by saying that the show was not only for woodcarvings but for woodworking etc. Thankless for replying and understanding my question. it could have been taken in the wrong way but it has been something I have been struggling with. Not only I struggle with others at our club do too, maybe newbies see things in black and white. Possibly a combination of woodworking and carving might work but at this stage I am thinking it would be neither and one would detract from the other. Thanks for the reply Pete |

| Thanks for all the input. I also have been wondering about what style I would want and I think whimsical (sp?) or maybe I mean charicature. But not a life like copy. Anyway just for background I want to carve a jeep or two to then be made into garden markers for my wife. I would make the jeep then put a whip antenna on it and hang a metal garden label tag from it. (Like Oregano, thyme, basil ect...)Then if I can do that I want to make molds from my carving to make more out of resin or cement to sell for outdoor gardens. Thanks again Kevin |

I never carved one but I love the look of carved cars, trucks and mechanical things. I saw a carved steam shovel the kind that dug the Panama Canal it was like 3' tall and very cool.
