Default carving pipes

anyone tried carving pipes, I wonder what the challenges would be, how the pipe draws, ease of holding size of bowl, and i guess most pipes are carved from briar so hardness would be an issue. any ideas? and most people dont smoke pipes today lol

there are actually more than a few contemporary pipe artists/makers, working away out there these days. I happened on some of this info while researching a bunch of old pipes that my husband found at a yardsale. 3 of the pipes were quite nice and one was made by a known pipe maker. While I was on the web searching for this info, several sites came up. One was geared toward pipe makers, selling all the components, the stems, briar wood, etc.. I don't have it in my favorites anymore but collectible pipes by custom pipe makers are still in demand.

I have carved a couple of pipes.I carved a simple pipe out of wild cherry that smoked real well with cherry flavored tobacco. The other pipe is a copy of a Native American pipe that was collected in 1790's.It is done in maple with pewter inlays and is identical in size to the original.

There was an old article in Wood Carving Illustrated. I'll see if can locate it when I get a chance. Try looking in the archives.
