| I carved for years using a Black and Decker workmate I found in a pond shop. I made a table work top from some a 2'x 3' 3/4inch piece plywood with a 2”x4”skewed on the bottom that clamped in to the workmate. I put an old sheet on the floor. It all broke down and fit in a closet. You can add all kinds of things to your hold you tools. I found a small shop vac at the same pond shop and used it when I was standing.

Get a big flat bedsheet...old one will do just great. Drape it over your lap and stretch it out over the floor and carve so you can catch your chips. When it's time for clean up, fold the whole thing towards the center. KEEP YOUR SPACE AS CLEAN AND ORGANIZED AS YOU CAN!!! Your parents will be most appreciative if they feel you are helping keep mess to a minimum. My suggestion will be to try hard to keep sanding to a minimum....Do it outside if you can, that dust goes everywhere. (understand the cold thing!!) Think of it as a challenge....Cut rather than Sand...I prefer not to sand my work. I do when I have to, I like the look of some tool marks so most of my stuff has the same look and feel. Show your parents you can be responsible in "their space" thay may give you a little more of "your own space" and a little more freedom........ KEEP CARVING!!!!!! and post some pics???

I carved small in the round figures in the bedroom for a while. I picked up a cheap vinyl table cloth that I draped over my lap to catch chips - worked pretty well.

Zack,it is always good to know there are young carvers like you taking the time to join this great forum, you have asked a great question that tells me you want to responsible and not upset your parents. All information you received is great and can can find a lot of useful stuff at any Goodwill Stores or other thrift stores. I purchased a great wooden computer table for $15.00 and have using it for all my carvings and for a couple of bucks I purchased a four by 8 painters' floor cover that I take with me where around the house I carve it catches all the chips, also be careful to look over your shoes as for some reason chips all stick to them and can mess up other rooms. I'm sure your parents will be very proud of you, once they see how responsible you can be. Oscar |

I built model air planes in my bed room, when I was a teen ager. Never used a mask when I was sanding the balsa wood. I've not had any problems with my lungs, guess I just got lucky, in that regard. I used model air plane dope to cover the silk and silk span on the wings and the fuselage of the planes. Now, I guess that I should add that the dope was NOT the kind that one smokes, or injects into the veins, I'm not that stupid. But oh the smell, it was all over the house. The folks never complained about it. I guess they figured that it kept me home. Mom always told me: "Don't you ever let me find out that you've been in those beer joints". Man oh man, she would have given me the dickens for sure. And she's one reason that I don't like alcohol today. The other reason is that I was a Migraine Head ache sufferer, for years and years, inherited them from Mom. |

Since it sounds like you are in Russia, some of the sources and ideas might be unknown to you. So try finding a used fan, you can sit reversed from you, with a heating unit filter on it to catch the dust. A Black and Decker Workmate is a portable fold up workbench, kind of like a super sawhorse table combination. You can substitute the table for the B&D Workmate, it just won't fold up. The bed sheet or table cloth on the table and into your lap will catch most of your chips. Good luck on solving this problem.

Welcome. This is great place. Lots of archives and discussions. Tried to put myself in the bedroom, carving. Judging by all the wood chips that have come up from the shop on my clothing, I might as well be carving in the bedroom. Need a tool box. Need another box for pencils, rulers, etc. Good plans for the bed sheet spread on the floor and another over my lap. |

Thanks for all the tips so far. I do have a few chisels(mind you cheap home depot ones) a small old timer knife, harpening stone, dremel with most basic burrs. I kind of went and got all the cheap hardware out of the way...screws l, toolbox, ect. And already nervous about money ive spent!! I tried the bucket dust water sperator because the one gallon shop vac i bought does not fit hepa filters, but no matter what i tried all the water just ends up in the vaccum, so dust concerns me. So does cheap tools but unfortunantly quality ones are not available to me, for lack of money, and no credit card. I figure ill just (DIY) everything. Also in a town where there is no craft stores how does one aquire good carving wood. Sorry this mindhas ALOT of thoughts.
