Default Carving love spoons with power tools

I have recently become interested in carving love spoons. I have purchased Shirley Adler's book on carving spoons, but I was wondering if it would be possible to successfully carve these spoons with power tools? Has anyone tried this?

Thanks!

Maureen Vickery

Maureen, I've been carving those for Christmas presents. Â*My list is now 15, counting all the important women in my life from sisters to daughters, in-laws and special friends. Â*I'm carving basswood and butternut, and the calla lily out of cherry. Â*I carve the bowl, inside and out, with my power carver. Â*The detail on the handle I carve with gouges and an X-acto knife. Â*I find the back of a #3 x 1/2', #5 x 1/2' & 5/8', and a #7 x 3/8', 1/2' & 5/8' to be perfect for rounding the curves and scrolls. Â*Back-bent gouges might work better, but I don't have them. Â*It's really important to not lose the 'lines' when you cut the blanks. Â*Some of those patterns are beautiful and nearly carve themselves if you get started right. Â*Someday, I'm going to do the double-ended spoons connected with the chain, for my daughter's wedding day. Â*BTW, don't worry about the 'sthingys' deal; it's weird but harmless.

Maureen, for unknown reasons this site will allow us to write the word 'fork' but not 's-p-o-o-n' ..... it always changes the word 's-p-o-o-n' to 'sthingy'. I guess we should be grateful that it doesn't dislike the word 'knife'
