Having carver for a number of years I cant tell you that the only time I have cut my self over that time is when I have not needed to take the time to put on a glove. Those times when I know, I know how to control the blade.

Tell you what, when I think I have control of the edge tools, knives etc.that is whammo,I cut myself and all this time I thought I had control of the blade. The only advice I would offer anyone, invest in a large box of band aids when you think or believe that one has so much experience and control of those sharp blades and do not need either finger guards or gloves, good luck.

Bob, I am a whole bunch of a reader and not much of a responder to the forum. I couldn't pass on your post tho- an eloquent speech and spoke to me in such a way as coming from the heart, but with a great understanding you have put into the subject. Having said you might have started off on the wrong foot with people you'd like to have become friends with, I speak for myself, if we were ever both to be in attendance at a conference, I'd be looking for the empty chair beside you to sit in.

We see experts in woodworking ignoring safety rules all of the time. But, they're on TV, demonstrating a technique that would be obscured if the all of the guards were in place. My pet peeve is ignoring dust in a TV workshop, but again, wearing a respirator would cover their face and you wouldn't be able to hear them speak clearly. Most of the TV woodworkers make a point of wearing safety glasses, but I'd like to see them wearing safety glasses with side-shields, and full face-masks when appropriate. Even a brief discussion of all of the proper guards and personal protection equipment would be smart and useful, noting they can't all be visible on a TV show for clarity sake.

It always occurs to me that we couldn't have people working in the factory under the conditions the TV woodworkers employ; OSHA, EPA and every other alphabet soup government agency would come and fine us and shut us down. I see a lot of woodworkers and carvers wearing dust masks that aren't NIOSH approved. Mike

It takes a big man to make your apologies and present the reason why. Good on you.
As a long time woodworker I have the utmost respect for my power tools. I always know where the blade is and where my fingers are. Take your eyes of the mark and you are in big trouble. I use my Delta table saw without the blade guard because it gets in the way of my cross cut sled. I do not use a miter gauge for cross cuts, only a sled. My hands are well away from the blade.
Woodcarving is no different, know where your blade is and where it is going. Use guards when you know they will protect, not get in the way of doing the proper job.

Bob,

I was one of those who was active on the thread that you mention above. No matter what words were spoken we still all share a common ground and that is our love for carving and the desire that each of us are not only successful, but safe in our carving experiences. We may from time to time disagree about certain things, but we are all still part of the same carving family. I extend my hand to you and Bob, well said. Thank You!

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

I missed the excitement and controversy of the thread I guess! LOL There are disputes here once in a while and it's no big deal! We're all human and have questions and different points of views, that's life. So I'm glad you are back and look forward to getting to know you!
