I just took 10 stitches to the back of my hand from a slip with a circular saw blade in my foredom .. the little ones about the size of a quarter. My question... do the kevlar carving gloves protect both sides of the hand,,,, any brand recommendations

Barry, in my book, you don't want any cloth gloves around power tools. The fibers have a tendency to catch on a lot of things. Wear some leather ones. Those little saw blades are deadly. Just be very careful. Tom

Do not...repeat.... Do not....use fiber type carving gloves when power carving. If you feel that you must wear a pair of gloves when power carving wear a pair of leather gloves where bit, burrs, and small blades will not snag. In addition, it's not a bad idea to wear a leather apron when power carving if you get in close to your work. T-shirts are like magnets to power equiment.

Yhey are both right. I made the mistake of wearing a kevlar glove while using a foredom once. It caught the glove and ripped the handpiece right out of my hand. IT took about 1/10 of a second. I was lucky and only got a couple of small scrapes. Go with leather gloves. Better yet, if possible mount your work in a vise. Do a search for "poor Mans's carving vise" Dan |

Fluffy fiber is what makes chainsaw pants work so well. Was a demo at Forestry Expo. Chainsaw pants with logs inside for legs. Full throttle, drop the power saw on the pants (leg). The saw gets so bunged up in the fiber, so fast and dead stop, never got through to the log leg! Demo once an hour so there was time to unclog the saw. I think a leather welder's apron should be on my shopping list. |

Leather welder's apron less than $10 at harbor freight. Bought it right after catching my shirt on fire during a long knifemaking session at the grinder. Re gloves- what about a steel mech glove, like butcher's wear? have seen them on Wally Worlddot com, but not in the store- would like to try one, would like to hear other's opinions on it too.... |

I saw a demo for a new Stop Saw. It uses sensors and a pneumatic braking system to stop the blade before any major damage can be done. You'll get a minor cut rather than lose part of your hand.. it was pretty neat. Ruins the blade though.
