| | Re: Carving Gloves John...
I just picked up another pair at Wall-Mart last week. I always try to have a spare and I'm forever leaving them somewhere. I lost my spare at the club carving two weeks ago. Remember, if they don't have them in the fishing section try the camping section. I've found them in both places depending on the store.

I just picked up a filet glove at Wal-Mart in the fishing section today and probly be trying it out tomarow (as i don`t carve after a few beers with or without a glove).
But as i told Sliver i might be trying some other gloves down the road just to see what i like.
At least this posting gave me some new and helpful information on hand safety for carving.
And would like to say everyone on this fourm is a great help for new carver`s.
Thank you

| | Re: Carving Gloves What ever you pay for a pair of Kevlar gloves or chainmail gloves is inexpensive compared to the time you sit around nursing a cut or a stab back to health..several years ago I ran my knife in to the upper part of my palm near the thumb and I still feel it ..every now and then...an oz of prevention is worth a pound of cure..dont skimp on safety equipment..they will keep you chipping away..

| | Re: Carving Gloves I use both the nubby kind and the mesh, worked fine for me. I don't worry about damaging the blade if I slip, I worry about protecting my hands. Blades can be resharpened. The nerve endings and tendons in your hand may not respond as well.

| | Re: Carving Gloves I've used the Polar Bear glove and was VERY happy with it. Then I made my own re-inforced leather gloves and was VERY happy with it also.
Then I severed a nerve with a 7/16 #2 in my thumb. Afterwords I set up an exp. on a dummy hand, and a stab like that would NOT have been stopped by either glove. So be comfortable so you can work safe. Be safe so you can work comfortable. |

| | Re: Carving Gloves ![001[1]3424](http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/images/smilies/001[1]3424.gif) ? Last year at the Wichita show I bought a new glove as the old one was looking pretty shabby. That new glove is still laying on the counter next to my carving station as new as the day I bought it. For some reason I just can't let go of that old glove. Considering the pieces I've completed since buying the new one that old one is still doing it's job. |

| | Re: Carving Gloves Another idea for gloves,
My wife works in food service, and since i was with her one day we went into one of the supply houses that cater to the food service industry, in the place i found serving/carving glove vinal coated stainless steel knit wire.
tough as nails, but you can still receive a poke,
to slow this on my thumb and finger i used the sport wrap sold at Walmart that only sticks to its self to wrap the finger.. the sports wrap (like veltrap) gets ratty but when it gets nasty looking i rip it off and apply a new coat.
the nice thing about the vinal coated glove is it dont pick up dirt, it dont make your hand sweat like kevlar and it stays white and clean, but the weave is starting streach and beginning to open on the fingers a little bit from being used 2 years with no cuts or holes in it.
it cost $17.00 at the food service supply, and may be something like the fish carving gloves mentioned here before,
but i would reccomend this glove to anybody...
it will not (as any glove) stop a direct sharp pointed poke, but nothing will stop everything.... | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
