What do you all use to carve eyes? Rounding the eyes as well as cutting the general shape. I carve 8-10in. Santas. The size of those eyes are kind of difficult to round. Right now I'm using A John Dunkle clipped point detail knife that has a rounded belly. Appreciate any help.

Some Dockyard tools and a Bütz detail knife. What i'd really like to have is a hand-held laser that can be controlled from 1.0mm down to 0.1mm depth, and be no wider a cut than 0.001mm. Claude Last edited by Claude; 12-23-2011 at 12:35 PM. |

I normally use a detail knife I received as a gift from Ron T but in the tutorial below he uses a skew. 3Crosseswoodcarving - Eye Carving Tutorial

I use my home made eye tools for large carvings but for things that size yes what the others said. I do find myself reaching for the small flame shaped diamond burrs as well. I have some home made eye punches but they are only good for setting a position you still must carve the eye. You can crush and mangle the wood with a punch if your not careful.

Knife , skew, tight V tool. Anything that works! Mostly the 2 Butz knives though. A stropping before the final cuts gives me the best results. Time to plan the direction of cuts in relation to the grain of wood. Carve On, Kadiddle |
