Default Carving Clubs

Several here have mentioned carving clubs. I don't belong to one....don't even know what they do. Well, I assume they carve...or talk about carving, but...well, what do you get out of it? Sort of like a place like this, but in person?

What? Huh? What?

Well that is a very interested question. For me the carving club allows me a place to talk in person with other carvers, get hands on help for any problem that I might have. It also gives me a chance to see what other people are carving, or in the process of carving. My club also offeres little seminars on how to carve different things, like chip carving, birds, butterflies almost anything. The only thing that we pay for is the material that we are carving in.

One of the other benefits is when I get done a carving there are enough people there that will give a good critic of it so I can advance my skill level with the next one.

!!

Hi Santa Lady,
Not a club member? Ya don't know what you're missin.
Most clubs meet at least monthly and the itinerary usually includes a show-N-tell segment. You get to see a lot of various carvings and are told how the carver achieved the results - A good way to pick up tips.
Many clubs organize a project for the year where every member is asked to participate. The project is often raffled or auctioned to raise funds for the club or some charity.
No club in your area? Start one!
You can find a listing of carvers and clubs around the country at Colewood's web site - Sorry, I don't have the address, but a Google 'search' should find it.
For an idea of what a club is like and what it does, check out ours at www.lancarvers.com
Beware. With your outgoing personality, you will asked to be the club president soon after you join!
Good luck.

Alright, you guys have me convinced. I live in the Columbus, Ohio area, and am off to search for a club in the area - there must be one. Getting there might be a problem for me, but it's worth a try - sounds fun. THanks!

Our 'club' is a good excuse to carveevry week. We meet every Thursday night for 7-9. Everyone pays $25/year to join, most of which we donate back to the Senior Center that lets us carve there. Twice a year we hold a sat/Sun carving session and open it for public viewing to help create some interest in potential carvers. We have done fund raisers before to purchase a sharpening machine and a wood burner. For me it gives me a time to carve when my schedule otherwise gets too busy, for others it is a social time. Sure helps to have 15-20 fellow carvers for advice and support!
