Default Carving class benches

I came across these neat carving benches being used for woodcarving classes at scout camp and thought that I'd share them. Personally, I prefer a more casual set-up when I'm doing my own carving but I thought that this was a good idea for teaching woodcarving and especially for a class full of kids.

They're amazingly simple and built with standard 2-by lumber and even used lumber would work just fine. If those were my benches and that was my class I would adjust the following things:
  • Safety: I only saw one of those kids wearing a glove for protection and it was leather eventhough there was a full box of gloves setting there. That wouldn't be "optional" in my class and I'd try to have kevlar gloves!
  • Backstops: I also believe that I'd add some kind of braces or backstops on those little tables so that I could teach the kids to get comfortable with finding ways to brace their wood as they carved. Every single kid was having to use their second hand for bracing the wood instead of using it to ensure a controlled cut.
With that said, I'm still overjoyed that kids are being encouraged to carve and just having the individual carving benches in place does encourage a good sense of organization which is good.
