Default carving books

Looking for some carving books in the Flat Plane style. The tutorials and video that Gene Messer has done, has been a big help for me. Now i`d like to try to carve something with arm`s away from the body or maybe leg`s in a different position.
So if anybody knows of any books with some step by step projects in the style that Gene dose, please let me know.
Thanks
John

check out anything by Harley Refsal. His latest book is very good and has a good step by step set of directions to carve a figure in the flat plane style. He has a couple older books in print but they are more just pattern books and done give step by step directions for anything. They do have interesting patterns in them though. He also has a video out that is good too, it shows how to carve a similar but different figure. I have not come across any other books about the flat plane style but just yesterday saw an ad for a book that was supposed to tell you how to carve a flat plane nativity, I think I might buy it. I agree with Jared, get the Art and Techniques book as the Carving Trolls and Other Caricature in Scandanavian Style book is basically a pattern book. I just received it yesterday and realized I should have gotten the other. Some great patterns in it that I will eventually be able to use though.

I agree with all the others suggestions. Now, if ya got lots of money "being the GREAT flat plane carver I am" I'd be happy to give you private lessons. You see, I make fire kindling wood in the flat plane style and I just can't keep it in stock, it goes so fast. And if you believe all of this, I have a great river here in Ontario that I'll sell ya.

You might want to also check out Gerald Ekern's book on flat plane carving, "Caricature Wood Carving with Gold Medalist Gerald Ekern" , it has a number of patterns plus carving and painting tips. ISBN 0-9711830-0-7
Gerald passed away a year or so ago , so it's his one and only book to the best of my knowledge.
Some of the on-line carving supply sellers should have copies.

OG.
