Leslie - I agree with most. most of the places mentions lead to quite a mess even when dealing with small carvings. Being an avid deer hunter, I do find myself creating some small items while dealing with the long hours of immobility. i usually carry a "Carving Jack" from Flexcut. This I have found to be quite nice for small projects.

This topic would be much less troublesome if we could all agree that wood chips are not dirt or dirty, and aren't a mess! Wood chips are highly desirable little pieces of virgin wood, revealed for the first time by our knife, chisel or gouge. We should revere our wood chips and be pleased when we create them. Mike

Over the years, I've carved at places other than home. When our kids and then grandkids were younger, and in track, baseball, softball, soccer--all outdoor events, we always took our lawnchairs instead of sitting in the bleachers. We'd often be gone all weekend for tournaments, with an hour or so between events and never enough time to get away. I almost always took carving--both small items like Christmas ornaments and larger items like animals. Often small children would come up and sit on the ground around me, waiting for a long curl of wood they could have to go show their parents. Older kids would come up and ask questions. The best part was that I could relax between plays and games AND get some carving done. And share my love of carving with folks who have never seen it being done.

I've carved at beaches, outdoor malls, health fairs, but never indoor offices and and malls. Got to admit, some of the long waiting times in doctor offices would have been easier to stomach if I could have gotten some carving done--maybe the wait would have been shortened!

Leslie....

It's just a small pocket knife (tool) manufacturered by FlexCut. It's real handy because it has an assortment of gouges and V-tools as well as a detail blade all in the same tool. It comes with a case and a strop. Check out the FlexCut site for more details: Carving Tools - Folding Knives Flexcut Tool Company

My Carving Jack is always on my side and a small project in my pocket. You never know when the opportunity will arise.

Thanks Donna and WoodcarverOh! I'm definitely going to get me one of those Jack knives and start carrying a small carving around with me.

Another reason to carve "small".......no mess at all when you have a pocket.
