Default carved peach seed

I remember my father carving a few peach seeds, course they was rounded with baskets, monkeys and other things,a hole was left in them so you could have them on a key ring.

Thought Id try carving a peach seed seeing I dont have alot of time to start any larger carvings with us going out of town for Easter.Plus I have several tin cans full of peach seeds,I knew one day I might try to carve one.

This baby elephant can stand alone and hes 5/8 of a inch wide and 1 1/4 inches long. After I had finished & sanding him,I used some mineral oil on him to preserve the wood of the seed, then just wipe it off.
I used knives and files to carve him.

Sorry the picts areint that good, but he has alot of details if you could hold him in your hand buttttttttt heyy I have a few dark brown spots in my hand now, plus a bad smell so Im off here to wash my hands.Little elephants are like little children, guess the next one,I will carve a dipper on him!

Your thoughts or comments are more than welcome. Thks'Forrest

Hi Forrest, I haven't seen a Peach Seed carved since I was a Kid. It was a Basket and supposed to be done by a blind man. It was finished smooth with the texture still in it. Strange what can bring back memories from the past. Merle

Windsong, people have been carving peach seeds for a long time, alot of the old timey whittlers would carve them. The way I carved mine was more in the round as we know it,legs and head and free standing, the old timey peach seeds was carved really inside the total seed. They are hard and you have to be carefull while holding them and carving one. It was my 1st time this morning to try in carve a peach seed but alot of fun. Gald you enjoyed the carved peach seed baby elephant. Thks Forrest

Windsong, after eating peaches I place the seeds on a board away from the house, dont try to clean it,the ants will totally clean it. Then once the ants are gone, then bring the peach seeds inside somewhere where they can dry. It wouldnt carve too well with it still wet. Hope this helps you some. Thks Forrest

Forrest,
Thanks for showing the elephant and explaining how you dried them. After reading an article once I attempted it but didn't dry it and gave up on it. After reading the article Spanky was nice enough to post and seeing yours I am off to get some peaches. Again a big thank you to you and Spanky
