Thanks everyone for the input. I have basic info on the deceased parent and found he had interest in wood carving and was interested in blue birds. I have found a couple places on the internet that sell basswood boxes, one of which is in Amish country near Berlin Ohio. I may order one of them and go from there. Thanks again! |

Wow that's great! What you can do with carving and bluebirds! I think you'll do just fine. Look forward to seeing pics of the results if you do it. Bob L

Don, when my mom passed Mother's Day of 2008 I turned a rather larger vase with a lid. I didn't have a clue how big to make it, so I made it about 14" tall and about 8" in diameter at the largest/widest point. I had some mahogany and maple laying around and I sandwiched the maple inside the mahogany. When the glue up was finished, I had what looked like a giant oreo (well not quite that dark) cookie. I turned it as a single piece the cut off the top after creating a rabbet so the lid would stay in place, then I turned the inside out. I did some lettering that my step father would appreciate, and then I finished it with polyurethane. It turned out to be really beautiful. Now, Goody provided us with a very obscure measurement of 200 Cubic Inches (that is the displacement of an inline 6 cylinder engine in a Maverick I used to have), but, to me, that is not a very useful measure. It does however convert to about 3200 cc (3.2 liters) or a bit more than 3.5 quarts.
