This hemlock root had a really big crack in the back so I couldnt carve him that deep. Hes a little olde shy druid and has curley locks, course his name is Mr. Curley~Hes 3 x 9 inches I like the nice wood grains you can find in olde wood or roots.

your comments are more than welcome..thks' Tn

I LOVE how you can take these gnarly old roots and knots and turn them into things of wonder and whimsey. Nice job!

Ditto what ChuckT said!

How did you finish the wood? Is hemlock naturally that color?

Never carved Hemlock before. It looks like you did some highlighting with a burner or is that the stain getting in the crevices. Very good.

Nice one. Are you using Hand tools or power tools or a combination of both. I Like it.

When I get theses roots course hard mud has dried on them, totally covered. I wash them and when dried I sand them off the smoothest I can. Yes the color is the same as you see on the finish carving I posted. I use natural Minwax stain & sealer on it which makes the colors really jump out.

Im gald you ditto'd{lol} and liked the little druid Joy! Tn

Theses roots are really hard wood, they have aged and once dry turn super hard, even harder than the wood in the tree.
I dont have a burner[lighter] since I quit smoking in 97',the stain ran and jumped in the cuts.I did paint his eyes. Thanks Patrick for your questions~ Tn
