Default Carved Elf Ornament finish question

I have been having trouble getting that nice tranparent color on my carvings,a la Mark Gargac. I have just finished a new one and ,with Mark's instructions, I think I finally have come closer to what I have always held in my mind as to what I have wanted to accomplish. I have worked a lot in cottonwood bark and that seems to call for a heavier application of paint, being a somewhat darker wood. Anyway, here is my latest 2x2x4 ornament.

He is absolutely wonderful. I love Christmas--especially the ornaments (I currently have 5 small trees). I hope I can do half as well some day.
