Ron Wells/Mike Shipley roughout knife works for me!! I also use a Denny roughout knife that works good too. I also have a good Drake knife I use for details. As long as it is sharp, it will work! Blake |

Robert, An assortment of #9 sweep gouges works well on roughouts as it matches the blade cutting them out. That and a good knife will do you well!

Ron Wells/Mike Shiply medium size, and detail size. I picked up a Stanley #199 aka "Old reliable" and find that to be very useful and I'm using it more and more all the time. Wayne |

No offense, but you don't actually carve a "roughout" (noun). You buy them. It's a terminology thing. To take off excess wood, you do "rough out" (verb) the carving. Maybe you should be more descriptive with your question...more specific, I mean. To rough out, I use large gouges, a Denny "Ortel" tool (or Drake), and/or a 'larger' knife. By larger, I mean longer than 1 1/2". I'm partial to my Allen Goodman upsweep and my Ralph Long straight blade knives. Last edited by Mitchell; 11-29-2009 at 05:09 PM. |
