Default Canvasback Duck

As requested by Andrew [ ajoholic ] i've carved a duck. Its a Canvasback drake duck which doesn't have much colour just black and red(ish) with white wings. Its my first go at carving a duck [ first ever carving of an animal ] and i think it came out okay. I used Mahogany for the body because the colour is just right for the head and neck, to get the black for tail and breast i burned the surface and then carved so the colour shows through very slightly. I made the wings out of bone for a few reasons (1) Its white as are the real ones (2) The detail of the feathers could be carved into it (3) I like to do things a bit different.
Hope you like him

Did you carve that all with a tiny knife? Or do you use something like a dremel?

Richard, he is lovely and I really like the way you have him painted and that you have used the natural grain & colour of the mahogany for his head. Have never seen a smaller duck and have never seen a duck that incorporates two different materials ( wood&bone) in creating the body. You push the envelope at all times. More power to you!

On the not so positive side, I find the bone a bit overwhelming. It's so white it draws your attention away from the head & tail. It makes him look like he is wearing a sweater. It becomes the focal point which detracts from rather than enhances the amazing little duck you have created. Maybe unbleached bone would work better? I don't know.

I hope you keep on doing more ducks, as with everything you carve your talent shines through.

Fantastic job Rich! Good thought about burning first and then carving! Only comment is I think you should have made him smaller!!!
