Ladies and Gentlemen, I am preparing to carve a football helmet which will be a cane topper. The cane (hopefully) will be a gift for a local high school volunteer coach who is having his knees replaced later in the month. I am creating a pattern with digital camera and computer but am having difficulty deciding how big to make the helmet. I think 2 1/2 inch diameter looks good on paper but my wife think it will be too big. This will be similar to canes that have a brass ball on top. Any input would be great. Ah Chip |

I would think that 1 3/4' - 2' would be better for a cane topper unless the person has very large hands. Mine are large and my newest cane has an aprox. 2' carved ball where the root was and it fits me nicely. If you are carving it seperately you could rough out several different diameters and try them to see what feels best for you. |

As a rule of thumb I make mine about twice the diameter of the top end of the walking stick (roughly).
