Greetings all, I would like to make my own carving arm vise, but need a clamping handle like the one shown. Can someone 1) tell me what the specific name for this type of handle is, 2) tell me where I can purchase one, or 3)what type of tool this would be a part for? Thanks in advance for your input -

I bought a similar item last year from the McMaster-Carr online catalog. You can surf their web site to find this or something similar. Click on the link below. Steve McMaster-Carr |

They are commmonly called "handle nuts". Most of what you will see now are plastic w/metal nut inserts. Woodcrart has them. Look in clamps or jig fixtures. Some hardware stores may have they in a "Hillman Fastener" assortment.

Do you have a welder, or know some one who does? A friend of mine ran a welding shop and he made one for me. First he took a piece of steel and put a hole thru it. Then he put the steel in a hydraulic bending machine to form it in to the form of a shallow C. After which he welded the nut under the hole in the steel. Man, I've had that handle for a thousand years and would be hard pressed right now to find it in that mess that I call my wood carving shop. It worked like a charm. |

Give Reid Supply a try too. Look under the "Knobs, Handles & Handwheel" section. Here is a link to their website: Industrial Supplies from Reid Supply Good Luck |
