Question Can you identify this handle?

Greetings all,
I would like to make my own carving arm vise, but need a clamping handle like the one shown. Can someone 1) tell me what the specific name for this type of handle is, 2) tell me where I can purchase one, or 3)what type of tool this would be a part for?

Thanks in advance for your input -

I bought a similar item last year from the McMaster-Carr online catalog. You can surf their web site to find this or something similar.

Click on the link below.

They are commmonly called "handle nuts". Most of what you will see now are plastic w/metal nut inserts. Woodcrart has them. Look in clamps or jig fixtures. Some hardware stores may have they in a "Hillman Fastener" assortment.

Try Rockler. They have all kinds of that stuff.

Do you have a welder, or know some one who does?

A friend of mine ran a welding shop and he made one for me. First he took a piece of steel and put a hole thru it.

Then he put the steel in a hydraulic bending machine to form it in to the form of a shallow C. After which he welded the nut under the hole in the steel.

Man, I've had that handle for a thousand years and would be hard pressed right now to find it in that mess that I call my wood carving shop. It worked like a charm.

Give Reid Supply a try too.

Look under the "Knobs, Handles & Handwheel" section.

Here is a link to their website:

Good Luck

Oh my, I forgot to add that the handle fit on to a tapered, metal shaft. This shaft was threaded and was screwed in to the wood. All of this was mounted on to a wooden arm that held it place while I carved. Extremely handy, how ever, I don't use it any more.
