While our Australian dollar is on a historic high against the US dollar now is probably a good time to open the wallet and purchase some of the things on my wish list. One of my main problems with carving, since I have nobody here that I know to guide me is to keep asking as many questions as I can. One of the doubts I have is how sharp really are my knives. So I have decided to bite the bullet and purchase a knife from the States. Not just any knife, but a knife that is the sharpest you can get. I would like to put a Poll up but do not know how. But my question is Who has the sharpest knife and or who is the best person to sharpen one for me. The sharpening would have to be first class. At this point, within reason, the cost does not come into it, providing the expense is in the blade, I could not care what the handle is like, if I am not happy with the handle I will replace it and make one to suit me. It is the sharpness that I need to see and if I have to pay overs, so be it, and I will put the expense down to the cost of the learning curve. Pete |

Allen Goodman makes a very sharp knife. I've also had a pretty good pile of slipjoint knives sharpened by him as well and his work is outstanding. Drake and Ralph Long knives also come very sharp.

Along with Allen's knives you may want to check out the Mike Shipley knives.

Buying it sharp won't last as long as keeping it sharp. Hindsight tells me that the road hasn't been as long as some might make it.

G'day Pete, before getting too involved, I would check out Carbatec, they carry Flex-cut and Pfeil (Swedish) knives that are always sharp and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.. CARBA-TEC - Woodworking Tools and Woodworking Machines They have a store in Brisbane...They also carry carving chisels and gouges, and a range of other carving accessories. Good luck John

Hi Blinky. I am aware of Carbatec. They have a permanent truck on standby for my woodworking orders. Along with my mates I think we pay the Driver's retainer. But, buying Flexcut anf Pfiel will not help my dilemma, I can go to Carbatec and check the sharpness but, in my mind, I still will not know if they are the sharpest as I will have nothing to compare it too. However I do have a Pfiel 9/2 gouge and I am happy with it. Pete |

Robson, Thanks for reply. My question this time is not really about keeping it sharp but indirectly is related to it. I need to understand in my own mind , " How sharp is sharp " Then if my own knives do not come up to what you guys say is sharp then I will have to go back and refine my sharpening skills. I have a fetish for sharp woodworking tools, I think I can get my woodworking chisels pretty sharp, better than most of my friends, but I know what sharp is on these tools as an expert has spend some time with me and I have seen his idea of sharpness which is better than mine so I know I still need to improve to get to his level. Woodcarving is different, I have this idea in my head that woodcarving knives need to be even sharper, so,that is the reason for my original question. Again, thanks as always for your replies, they are appreciated. Pete |
