Default Can anyone help identify this woodwork?

I bought this carving in France and Ive always wondered where it might be from originally. Its signed VDG, 49. Is it African? I think it seems the work of a very good hand and any opinions or views welcome. Many thanks.

Looks to me as if it has more of an Indian flare on the people figures. However, the hair doesn't fit Indian?

Kind of struck me as East Indian as well.

I think of Indian as more spiritual whereas this is more sensual, and the figures seem a bit too full? Do Indian or African carvers sign and date in this way? That seems more european?
