Default Butternut sign.

Finally finished the Butternut sign that the lady asked for. The carvings and letters were carved seperately and added, they also are of Butternut. Colin, that stick cleaned up just fine, thanks. I sprayed a semi-gloss varithane finish on it, still needs at least one or two more coats.

Bob, that is a beautiful sign!! I'm quite taken with the idea of applying the letters. I have to do a sign for a customer, and am apprehensive about the lettering. He wants a loon and a carved osprey, that I can handle, but the lettering would be ideal applied. Did you carve the letters?? If you don't mind, would you tell me a little about how you manufactured the letters.

Bob,

Great sign! I like the combination of the celtic knots, and letters into the sign. And the grain in the butternut just brings everything together. Great job!

Hugh, the letters are Celtic by design, the capital is of a different Celtic script/style. The letters, and the knots, were scrolled out of a 3/8" piece of Butternut and then carved to shape. They take lots of time, and even more sanding, but worth the effort. The letters I found in a book "159 Celtic Designs" by Amy Lusebrink, Dover Publications, through Fox Chapel.

The base is a slab of Butternut, about 7 1/2" x 18" and the only carving on it, was to round the edges about 3/8" .

When sitting down with the lady to design the sign, I asked how she wanted the letters, and let her chose the options: painted, burned, carved in, carved seperate and applied, or relief carved. She selected this method. Takes a bit less time than relief carved from a single piece, though not by much.

Beautiful Bob -- unbelievably beautiful.

You know I'm hooked on Santas. I have this far away dream of a large one holding one of those Celtic knots (correct term/spelling? Shesh- if I can't get the correct term or spelling --- how can I expect to carve it???)

great job on the sign Bob that piece of butternut didnt look like that when I cut it off that log with the chainsaw. Are you sure that is the same piece of wood I sent you? Maybe I had better cut some of it up I have a whole garage full of it. I just love your attention to detail my friend not only on the sign but in everything you do.
Great work.
Colin
