When it comes to rough cutting and fast removal of wood, which kind of bur manufacturer do you prefer or you use and are satisfied with i.e. Saburr-tooth, Kutzall or Typhoon carbide? Price seems to be about the same on all three so, was wondering why I would choose one name over another?

It will mostly be a case of user preference. I like Kutzall, although the one Typhoon I have works well. I've seen the name Saburr-tooth, but don't have any, so I couldn't say from experience how good they might be.

When I use them(burs), I use Kutzall. Heard a lot of good things about those Typhoon burs. Like Whitecree said, matter of preference.

Hello bbeery, For removing the most wood when roughing, kutzall is hard to beat. The main draw back to them seems to be the very deep grooves in the wood. I was told that the typhoon bits removed as much wood as the kutzall without this problem. I did have a couple of typhoons for a while but kept going back to the kutzall. (strictly personal preference) I try to remember to switch from the courser kutzall to the gold colored finer kutzall as I get closer to the shape of wood I desire. From there to the cushioned sanding sleeves to get any more of those deep grooves out before going on to the detail work. Hope this helps. |

I use the Typhoon to rough out and they move a lot of wood very quickly, especially the Red's, then the Blue's and accurately. I then clean up with Kutzall's Silver, then Gold's. To sand, I'll use a sanding sleive or diamond or ruby burrs. Typhoon's will take a chunk out of your skin/muscle really fast if you're not careful or snick a hole in a pair of jeans even quicker. Safety first, I use leather gloves and apron! Bob

Re: grabbing wood, skin and cloths.... I have been clipped in the finger by both bits, although I probably shouldn't be admitting this.... anyhow, getting hit by a kutzall is very much like what a garden tiller does to your garden soil. It turned my finger into hamburge in one spot. The typhoon bit just barely touched my finger and went zip, to the bone in the blink of an eye. Still have that scar. As for your cloths, it is recommended to wear a leather apron when using power. They aren't that expensive. Catching a bit in your clothing will frequently snap your shaft on the tool also. Then you need a new shirt and a new shaft. The bit won't grab the leather like it does fabric. Happy carving. |

I bought a mini Monster from Woodcarvers Supply in Florida to try. They're not cheap but they really remove the wood fast. Two advantages over Kutzall, which I also own: Much less dust, as the Monster burrs shave off chips, not rip out dust particles ; and they cut smooth instead of leaving lots of grooves. Web site is http://www.woodcarverssupply.com/store/default.asp and the item I bought is 629526. Usual disclaimers: not associated in any way with the store. Claude |
