Default Building Carving Blocks

Hey Guys:

Just thought I would put this out there. I carve fairly large subjects and until recently I have carved logs up to 24" diameter and 5' high, for my subjects. I have a couple of projects that I wish to carve and I do not want to deal with checking, that is always a consideration when carving logs. I want to build up my own carving blocks out of Basswood. I do not have suface planers and edgers, or a wood shop at my disposal. I really don't want to buy all this equipment just to make up carving blocks. Does anyone know of a wood shop that can accomodate my needs in the Toronto, Ontario area. Or even a DIY shop where I can rent the use of the required machines to make up the blocks I require.
Aney recommendations would be appreciated

Thanks Again
Bill Maillet

Hi Bill. Does your local school system have shop equipment? You might get to use theirs, or find a student to do the work for you. Many smaller lumber yards can mill for you, tho you might have to glue up yourself. After that try the phone book for cabinet shops and let your fingers do the walking..

I just learned about Heinecke Wood Products (Heineckewood.com). On their website they claim you can order "any size block you want". Might give them a try if all else fails. They're in Wisconsin.
