Default Buckthorn Spatula

Buckthorn Leaf Spatula

This buckthorn spatula is one I whipped out over Thanksgiving. I think the blade looks like a leaf…a buckthorn leaf? well I really don't know as I have never seen a buckthorn bush.

I bought this green buckthorn blank from Frank Foltz at Spoons of Wood.

This one is going in my Mom’s Christmas stocking along with a couple of other spoons I have recently done.

Great choice of wood and nicely done. I'm sure Mom will appreciate such a nice, thoughtful gift. Mike

I agree with Mike. That's a great spatula, wood and design both.

Talking Re: Buckthorn Spatula

Excellent work Thumbs Up, I have been trying to find out which buckthorn is specificly. I know it grows all over my area and it is a critical invasive species according to the DNR they want it gone. I am going to look at those blanks from Frank, Do they come bandsawn?
Thanks for taking the time to post this
Carl

Thanks guys. This one was a fun one.

Frank's blanks are all bandsawed out. I have quite a selection of green wood from him in my freezer, but I am really starting to like Buckthorn about the best of all. The irridescent "wrinkly" grain patterns are quite nice.

Here are some examples of his sawn blanks...all these buckthorn.

Carl:

According to Barry Gordon (Barry Gordon Woodcarving) buckthorn is Rhamnus cathartica, an ornamental, spiny shrub or sometimes small tree. BTW, you want to see some cool spoons, that is the place to go.
