Someone gave me a piece of Buckeye, it's as soft as bass wood, does not fuzz has tight grain and blue streaks through it. Does anyone have additional info. on this? is it an Ohio wood, where can it be purchased ?

Ya should easly find it at the amish sawmills, I have used buckeye alot on the lathe and it is a very pleasant wood. Here's a link with info on the tree.
Aesculus glabra - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As for a place to purchase it I would try sawmills, I haven't seen alot of it for sale maybe someone else has. Mainly I see small peices other then the wood they do sell alot of the buckeye burl, very beautiful.

My experience with Buckeye wood is that you have to find some and then get permission from the land owner to cut it. In the Kansas City area where I live, It grows in small groves and is hard to find. It is usually small and croocked so sawmills don't want to bother with it. it's my favorite wood to use but I've never found any place to buy it. I had a good location to cut my own for several years but a large Corp bought the land and put up no trespassing signs all over the place. So far I havn't found anyway to get more of it. Hope you have better luck then I've had.

Ebay has a TON of Buckeye for sale. I look on ebay daily for unique pieces of wood. Heck, I just saw Keoma's woman in a rocker on there the other day...(sorry, Keoma, I forgot what you named her in the post you made on here.) Just do a search for Buckeye in the crafts section & you'll get a whole gaggle of Buckeye.

The genus aescula has about 6 native varieties in the US.....the Ohio Buckeye aesculus gabra is probably the most commonly know one. Good reference, there Carl!
They are collectively known as "horse chestnut" trees and the nuts are actually poisonous.

The edible fruit of the American chestnut, you know, (the ones roasting on a open fire? ) are in the Beech family of trees.

Haven't carved either of these so have no first hand knowledge of them, but about a year back Bob_in_TN sent me a chunk of buckeye I gotta try when I get around to it..
Boy, am I slow, or what?

Al

I just made a post and then saw yours. I was wondering if there's a demand for buckeye. I have a large stand on my property I was planning on clearing. I don't know what to do with it.
