Hi, I am new here. I have been looking at this site for some time. I have a lot of time on my hands right now. I just had surgery and glad to say I am doing fine. I have been repairing and building furnirue for 40 years. I have done a lot of replacement carving to fix antique furniture. Several years ago I was on Woodweb and a man in Ohio had a lot of carving tools that belonged to his father who was a pattern maker. I bought 48 top quality carving tools for $400 In the buy were a 12 pc set of Buck off set gouges. They are from around 5/16 all the way up to 2 inch or close. I am in no shape to go to the shop and look right now. They are all in great shape. they are for pattern making which I am good at because I was a tool and die maker in another life. These chisels have an inside bevel. They are streight on the back side. My question is what is the best way to sharpen them. I have a Tormax and dosens of stone and 9 grinders and buffers but the only way to sharpen these are with a round tapered stone. Anyone have a better way to sharpen them. Thanks. This is a great site with great carvers. I have a lot to learn about the woods used for carving. I have always used old furniture for scrap wood so I could make things match with the right grain and color. |

ChrisS, I just recently purchased 10 Buck gouges from Rick. Do you have any history of the Buck name? I understand they are still in existence but in China and have plastic handles. Got the impression they aren't good carving tools now, don't know really. The set I have are older with wood handles in excellant shape. I'm going to really like them I think. I haven't had a chance to use them yet.

I only have a few which I bought in an antique store a few years ago. I like them better than any of my other tools. Dan |

All mine are old. I would say50-100 years and some older. My buck brothers are pre WWII I am sure. I have not seen them coming from China. There is a tool company on the web that bougth the old Buck brothers company. They had Buck old stock they were selling. I bought a set of offset chisels. They are not buffed out as much but they tell you that when you buy thm. They are great and hold a good edge. I just had surgery and my head is killing me. I will try to find the site. My computer crashed and I lost all my saved sites. I have the recipt but I might not be able to find it. I have other Buck carving tools as well and I like them. If you ever get a chance to pick up old Buck chisels I would buy them in a heart beat. You can look up the company history on the Net. You will find out all about it. |

I will get on the web and search. Sounds like I did good. Rick said they were collectables or good work tools. I plan on both. Thanks for the feedback.

I have had many lives. LOL I owned an antique mall for years. I look back on it now and wonder how I did everyting. I have been collecting tools for around 45 years. Buck made great carving tools. I have at least 70 of them. They have served me well through the years. My offset ones are 15 inches long or so. Some are worth $80 each or more. The set of 12 I have now I have owned before. I did not have them all at one time but I got over $800 for two sets. 13 pc in all. If you got them under $20 each you stole them. |

I found the site wher I bought the newer Buck brothes offset chisels. I posted it down under tools and sharpening. It is on the Two Cherries pst but I will list it here. They no longer have the Buck offset chisels or gouges. They still have Buck Brothers new old stock on chisels. http://www.craftsmanstudio.com/html_p/planes.htm This is a good company to buy form. I have place very large orders and they alway are on time. |

I just got back from Texas and after I get rid of the Texas crude I picked up while there it's to the studio to test the Buck's. They are nice looking gouges and will do wonders with the reliefs I intend do. Thanks for the feed back.
