| | Buck Mtn guy,relief carving I've had this old,I mean old and worm holes saw mill cut off board,round on the front & flat on the back. I cleaned it,was totally black at 1st outside and ever so often I sand on it from time to time.Its 7 X 16 inches.
Missed a few days carving,so today I didnt want anything too detailed and thought Id carve something in this old wood.{ I dont know what type of wood it is,its in the hard wood family for sure}
Ive begged my wife which has shown and taken me to mtns,steams,lakes,trails that her grandfather only knew of but this one Mtn she didnt wont to take me too. Leaving Roan mtn theres a road going to the left and a sign,Buck Mtn. Honey,people are very different on Buck Mtn,alot of people have disappeared or been found dead up there. The people there dont like strangers.
After twice begging her one early morning we drove into and up to Buck Mtn. There was mostly one way roads at times,saw some nicer houses once coming down on the NC side of this mtn,you started in Tn. But alot of real mtn shacks and people,pretty rustic area but I was enjoying seeing it. Alot still use outhouses and get thier water from creeks.
Had to pull over on the side as a old pick up truck was coming down the same rd,the younger guy who was driving, smiled and he was rough as this carving!
Anyway I called this carving a Buck Mtn guy,not a wood spirit,not a druid,not a troll.
Used stains on it but did add a little paint to his eyes & teeth. Its was a fun little project and Im not making fun of people that live on Buck Mtn.either.
Its not carved that deep,soon as it cools down some out side & I can carve outside I will be using my larger chisels,gouges and mallet where I hope to be able to carve deeper. Picts,alot of deep worm holes on the left side in this carving.
Your comments are more than welcome. ~Tn

| | Re: Buck Mtn guy,relief carving Forrest....I swear I don't know how you do it!! You're like a machine turning them out as fast as you do, and you carve the most interesting pieces from wood that most wouldn't even think if using, and turn it into such wonderful stylistic pieces. Your work is uniquely yours and I try never to miss looking! A great job, as usual! You are a true artist......Bonnie |

Great piece of work. and your wife is right about that place. Not that I am familiar with that particular mountain but there are places like that sprinkled through out the smokies..... Over in N. Carolina we have several like that. Over the years they have become a bit less scarey but we heard stories about them and were told not to go in there. I love the Mountains and the people there, but there are pockets of areas up in there where the family trees don't fork, where they do resent outsiders and don't feel any laws from the outside apply to them..... You should listen to your wife.....no kidding.
