I have never broke a knife tip before--but I have now. What do I need to do to make the knife functional again. Obviously, I'll be more careful next time, but need some advice for this one. It is a Denny knife. Guess I am hesitant to grind it down but that may be my only option. Would appreciate any helpful advice.

Yes, you will need to grind it down to shape you desire, being careful not to overheat the tip. Then hone the edge back to what you once had. Think of it as a learning experience! LOL

Leavyc, Grind the spine, or backbone of the knife back down to where it meets the end of the cutting edge, and try to maintain the original shape that the Denny knife had. It will be just like new, just a little shorter. If you are using a high speed grinder, keep water handy to keep the metal cool, or you will ruin the temper. Tom |

When you grind it down, grind the back of the blade, not the cutting edge, to reshape the tip of the knife. Grind the back for about 5 seconds, dip in a glass of water, repeat. If the tip turns blue, you've just lost the temper in the steel because it got too hot. After you get it ground back to the proper shape, tip it about 45 degrees to each side and carefully round the square edge of the back just a little. BTW, you can do this grinding on a wheel, on a stone, or even on sandpaper. The wheel will do it quicker, but is a lot more likely to burn the tip. I've done this to my Flexcut detail knife three times now. Still my favorite knife, even though the blade is getting short Claude |

Don't listen to these guys. First, tell your wife that your knife broke and that you had better get two new ones in case it happens again. Then fix the knife like they said! Take care, Dan |

I like the way your mind works Dan. A welcome chuckle.

leavyc: This happened to me recently, and I was pretty hesitant to try fixing it. But I followed Tom Ellis's advice, using my Tomz Knife Massager. It took only a few minutes to grind the tip back using the 600 grit wheel. A little finishing on the 1200 grit wheel and a bit of stropping, and the knife was good as new. If I didn't have the massager, I would have done this with a stone or sandpaper. That high speed grinder in the garage is way too aggressive for me. . .
