Do you want a square design or a free form design?

How about a box with a chip carved design on the top? This one is from Wayne Barton's book on chip carving:

How about carving something to show what his favorite pastime was, or possibly him enjoying his hobby.

Look for band saw boxes.

Like these.

Band Saw Boxes

American Woodworker - Google Books

Band Sawed Boxes

etc... from 'band saw box patterns' woodworking search results at WoodworkersWorkshop.com

That's how I like to make a box. Use basswood or butternut and carve what you want on the box.

Added: I forgot this simple design that I like for fast boxes.

Boxes With Pin Hinges

and check wooden book covers for ideas
