I see bowls at the flea market that appear hand carved, not turned as they are sort of oval/retangular. Looks like it would be great for fruit or a flower arangement. Anybody have any experience with these? I have done spoons. Looks like a big spoon. Jerry |

I like hand carved spoons and bowls. My wife Aki and I carve spoons and bowls. What's especially nice about handcarved bowls is size and shape are limited only by our imaginations. It's easy being square and it's easy being round, but try being oval. Last edited by Scott; 06-20-2011 at 12:59 AM. |

I enjoy carving bowls. Here are some pictures of a small butternut bowl that I had just recently finished carving. It came from a bump on a log .

Here is a bowl and spoon set that I'm currently working on. The wood is curly / spalted hard maple. A friend of mine is a wood turner and he brings all his wood scraps to me to be processed thru my wood stove. I snagged this chunk out of his scrap thinking to myself there's no way this is going to get burned! I've only roughed out the spoon, the bowl is coming along nicely. |

I have carved several small trenchers, or elongated bowls for food use. I carve around the top of them after hollowing them out. The make great serving bowls. I even did some from 2" X 6" X 12" pine boards. The work was partially done by having the top and bottom already flat. I've also carved what turned out to be a bowl that started out being a turtle. His shell got hollowed out after I carved most of him. Thor |

Finished the bowl and ladle out of the curly hard maple in post # 4. Here's what came out of that discarded chunk o' wood. The last picture was taken out doors. |

Brian, Wow! Beautiful! Art in every way...it's creation as such a beautiful wood, your eye to save it from the fire, and the carvings themselves, saved as a matching set. All those aspects came together in your mind and hands...must feel good! Art, not just work, but vision! Very nice! Wade |
