| | | Bowl carving I have been trying my hand at carving bowls and have made several of various shapes including some "natural edge". I went out to my cache of wood gathered after our many hurricanes last year. I selected a "Ivan" (hurricane) pine log and began cutting a burl section and found a real treasure. The wood had a section as wide as my hand of bright pink wood outlined by black. I have enough for two bowls that will be very unique. Anyone run into this unusual coloration?

Has any one done Dough Troughs?
Yes Flesh is softer. I've never hit my self with my BIG saw, but had the chain come off a couple of times!

| | Re: Bowl carving I made one out of sycamore-beautiful wood with lots of color!-with frogs and grapes on the rim. I made it too big...my wife loves it but doesn't use it, as it's too big for her to move around and work with. Don't make it too big.

Thanks for being patient with my lack of response but I had a glitch in the system that wouldn't let me post. Fixed now.
The Merlin is an awesome tool that hogs out wood fast and easy but it has to be used with extreme caution...it's like using a handheld paper shredder in spades!! It got away from me once and bounced off my safety shoe and continued to dig in the dirt. Scary deal.
Eleanore, I think I attached a picture of the red spalted pine bowls. I have never posted a picture before, so if it doesn't work maybe we can figure some other way of sending them to you. By the way, your wax work is awesome. I am humbled.

Wade | I have the lankesky (SP) great hog cutting tool. I can see potentail with it. It seems to me it is made for a left hander. The way I have it set up I can't see my work like i would feel safe. I tried to turn the gaurd around but that would put my knuckles in unsafe area. I quess i will figure it out as i will use alot of fire wood to practice. I read somewhere where you make you marks on the wood but don't really understand. any help? | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
