Default Books on carving

Hey everyone,
If you could each pick one book to reccomend to a person who is interested in carving, what would it be?

Only one huh??? Tough.

'The Big Book of Whittling and Woodcarving' by Tangerman. Its got about the best overall coverage of the different types of carving and tools. I'd like it to be more in depth, but would have to take up weight lifting to carry it around.

Another vote for Tangerman.

Either 'The Big Book of Whittling and Woodcarving'
or 'Whittling and Woodcarving'

Both of these books are FILLED with information on woods, tools, types of carving, and even some patterns.

Dont think I could pick just one to me it depends on what the person wanted to carve. I am a book junkie in fact I should own shares of Fox Chapel.

Is there a difference between 'The Big Book Of Whittling and Woodcarving' and 'Whittling and Woodcarving'?

Oooooh my, Bob,
Just one?

Lemme see, one general book to cover everything would probably be one of the Rick Butz early books...they cover about everything. I've got Tangerman's books and they are a good primer. Harold Enlow's early books are great. But, really, it depends on so much more like what kinds of carvings you want to try. There's so many good specialty books that cover the basics and specific topics.

Yes there is. The 'Big Book of Whittling and Woodcarving' has more projects and patterns while 'Whittling and Woodcarving' has more information on tools, cuts, woods, and carving styles.

I guess I should explain why I asked. I'm putting together one of the 'so you want to learn to woodcarve' things on Amazon. There is one out there already, but I don't think it's very good, so I wanted to provide a good one.

Thanks for all your help.

My own selection/recommendation would be Rick Butz's book 'How To Carve Wood'.

Years ago, as a new carver, it was the first one I found that was the most useful. Haunted the library looking for information, it was the one that helped me the most. Wish I had a copy of my own of the original edition now.
