Thumbs up Book New Masters of Woodturning

New Book that gose far beyond "Just carving on turning" very insperational.. If you happen to have a lathe that is sitting in a corner of your shop gathering dust, because you got bored with making the same old round things... Take a look at this book it might just change your view.

In the furniture trade the woodturner used to work closely with the woodcarver preparing shapes/blank's for carved table/chair legs, newl posts, etc... I feel this book brings three together The woodturner, The woodcarver and The artist.

The book sounds interesting, but we need a link or more information: exact title and publisher.

I have always wanted to carve something on a turned object - just for fun. Still have that on my "to do" list - if I saw this book, it may provide the push that I need to move this up my list!

I just got into trying this sort of thing recently and I thought for those of you interested in carving on turnings the result of my first attempt would provide some inspiration. I do not turn but a friend provided me with several bowls with 3/4 to 1 in. thick walls. First the wall thickness was reduced everywhere except for the snake pattern. Then the snake was carved and detailed. You will notice that I used the full thickness of the wall for the head by cutting the lip of the bowl down in that area. Finally the background was textured with a diamond cylinder following the grain lines in the wood (cherry). Sorry I don't have a color shot of the finished piece. I airbrushed the background with a light transparent green. Trying for a "snake in the grass" effect. So I guess what I'm suggesting...if this sort of thing appeals to you, get yourself a thick-walled bowl and go at it!

Hi David
the bowl is looking good! Any chance you could send it to the members work Gallery?

I have a lathe, but since I moved to Cumbria from Birmingham (UK) I've hardly use it; however after getting more settled and back to my work bench routine, I'm looking at doing just that!

I started a snake stick about two months ago, it features a snake sneaking up on a frog, but the frog has spotted it and is just in the start of a jump to freedom/survival... When it's finished I'll post pictures to the Gallery.

Clive

Sure Clive, I'll try to get a decent photo of the finished bowl and send it in to the gallery. I'm looking forward to seeing your snake stick with the frog. Those are two of my favorite subjects for sticks.
