Default Bodock. Present

before Christmas my brother called and wanted to know if i would carve a piece of osage orange wood for him that he had found...i laughed and said NO!!!!...osage is another word for bodock a very hard wood.i carve with hand tools so i didn't want to tackle this, but told him to send it to me and i would look at other options. this is what i came up with i very lightly carved Calvary and the 3 crosses in line form. then spent all afternoon burnishing the piece . which simply means i had a very hard piece of walnut that was smooth, and i rubbed it with alot of hand pressure all over the piece of bodock. after hours and hours of this it produced the slick glossy look you see, there is no other finish applied to it other than the burnishing. the the 3 crosses are to the left it maybe kinda hard to see in the pic. so then i sent it to him for Christmas he thought i wasn't going to fool with it...sometimes simpler says more. pardon the picture i didn't take it he sent it to me

Nice hard wood. My sister sent me a piece of mesquite branch. Tried carving and gave up. But made a great bandsaw box! Only put clear polish on it, came great. Wood burned her name and designs

Daddio,

I hear you brother. I am blessed with "hedge apple" or osage orange all over my property. They are very hard to carve. I have only carved a few wood spirits in the wood. It turns out very beautiful if you can get it carved and finished. My son and I spent several hours cutting oasage logs out of the woods to use as fence post for the horse fence, had better success with fence post than with carving.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

I think it's beautiful! I love how the osage can be polished like that. I have a spoon I'm carving out of it and where i carved the grain the right way it is shiny.
