Default blame it all on the father in law

hey everyone im new here but really enjoying all the tips and advice, so i ve only been into wood carving for about four months now, i just got married to the most wonderful girl in the world, and her dad recently gave me some really great tools(what more could you ask for) before all i had was exacto knives and leftover two by four,s so you all, im sure can relate to the frustration, not to mention the four stitches on my hand on our wedding day, but now with these new tools im carving up a storm on salvaged wood all the time, so point in case... new house, lots of honey do's, and on my day off the time for me to catch up on everything that could be done what do i do..... ha i just say blame it on the father in law.
on a serious note thanks a ton, you totally lit up a passion

also i just finished a relief of a daisy on basswood, any tips or suggestions on stains or finishes?

If you are newly married, then I think the her/me ration needs to be increased! Chuckling. Remember: Happy Wife, Happy Life!!!

Congradulations on the wedding. For the daisy try just sealing it with some Deft satin Laquer. It does a nice job. I've not had much luck with stains on Basswood but paints work well.

Have fun,
Dan

If you want to work on something big when you pick up my tools take that elf I have roughed out, I was going to give him to your wife anyway. It is white oak around 3’ tall sitting just out side of my shop, should give you some good practice with gouges and finishes.
