What do you guys recommend to use as blade protectors for my knives and gouges? Are there things that I should not use also? (that might dull or mess them up). Also is there some trick to using the spell check on this site? I click the buttons and nothing happens.

Hi Makmlost, sorry I can't help with the blade protectors. I am learning also. but on the spell check, I notice mine comes up behind this window. so if you just pull your top bar down just a little. the spell check widow is there. click on that. and it will come to the front. and then you can check your spelling. but that is only in the go advanced box. not this quick relpy one. hope this helped some. Lowes sells clear plastic tubing of all sizes. You can cut it with a pair of scissors to what ever length you need to protect what ever blade or tool length you're trying to protect. You can also buy craft foam at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's, etc... and make your own tools sheaths by cutting to size and super gluing the pieces together.

I have a wooden toolbox that I have fitted with dividers for each tool, so the knives and gouges never come in contact. The knife blades fit into saw slots. The gouges fit in rounded slots that keep the cutting edge from contacting the end of the box. It's even better than the Pfeil design.

I also use the clear plastic tubing, very inexpensive and works great. Dave |

for my knives I went fancy. I make a gaurd out of wood and rare earth magnets. They stay in place and look nice. To make one trace your blade's shape on a 1/4" thick piece of wood. cut it our so that the plade slides in esily when another piece of wood is sandwiched over it. Drill two 1/4" shallow holes for the magnets and then glue them in place. Then glue the cover piece over this assembly. the last step is to cut it to final shape and sand and seal it. Another option is on this website. Look at lessont #2 Carving Class with Will Hayden Dan |

Hey, Like Dave and Phil, I use clear plastic tubing. Cheap. Easy to cut to size. See-through so I can tell exactly what tool is inside. Comes in all sizes to fit your smallest to largest tools. I usually buy from a foot of it to use for small tools and 2-3 feet of sizes that fit several tools, then cut it to fit from the tip of the blade to snug over the edge of the handle. Donna T

I'll second TreeWizard's suggestion: wine corks. I'd been using some styrofoam pieces, but they were starting to get loose on the blades. Then I remembered that I had some leftover corks from the last time I made wine. The corks fit on nice and tight (perhaps too tight, these synthetic corks), and they're much less likely to get cut or broken, leaving the blade to do damage or be damaged.
