Default Black Walnut.

I had a friend give me a nice piece of Black Walnut 2x4x18 a couple of weeks ago. I been sitting here looking at it but it won't talk to me. I know it'll be harder than the hammers of He** but I want to try my power carving stuff.

I'm open for ideas.

If you use knives on it,you will have a life time to talk to it!! LOL Carve something natural, keeping the pretty grains of the walnut plus finish it natural if it was me. Would make a great woodspirit or wizard.

Good luck,Forrest

Hi, A friend of mine is giving me an 8'x4"x8" piece of Black Walnut. I am thrilled to get it. I have done one carving in Walnut it was only my second carving. a hound dog, but I loved the way it carved. I power carve since my hands are so bad and use my hand tools also. I hope the wood tells you what is there to let out. The grain is beautiful to work with.

Black walnut carves just fine with gouges. I have the large Flexcut set with the special handle made for use with a mallet. I used it to carve Leaping Dolphin - Wood Carving Illustrated Photo Gallery , Stylized woman and Gorilla - Wood Carving Illustrated Photo Gallery

Carving walnut has been pretty well covered in these posts and I don't carve much small stuff so have no recommendations on subject matter.

The only thing I would add is to make certain that it is dry. Walnut takes a long time and if not dry will start splitting and checking soon after you start to thin it down.

Black walnut makes beautiful stylized carvings that show off the wood. Get yourself a cool flowing form without much detail.

You could get a few spoons out of that piece of wood.

Anything Worth Carving Is Worth Carving In Black Wulnut. It Holds Detail And Finishes Beautifully
