I won't tell you how old I am, you would say, 'have you been living in a box?' LOL, last night was the first time I had seen or heard of a 'billikin'. I have heard the word from Aussies, but I thought they used the
term to describe a 'dummy', but saw some last night on an appraisal show and they said they had been around since the beginning of the century?? Geez...have to say tho....they are ugly suckers ! LOL

Thanks Nancy
Looks like the old Trolls doll everyone had hanging on the mirror in the car in the late 60's and 70's
we used to also call the Damn-it dolls

just was not famillar with the term Billikin

I am old and from the South so it takes a long time for all the new words and termonology to get to us.

Your google search turned up some intresting pics of them
good job

Billikins are traced to both alaska and the far east.
They are considered to be of good luck and are tokens of happiness.
I am carving a totem pole for a lodge group known as 'The Royal Order Of The Jesters' whom I beleive to be a part of 'The Masonic Order'.

Whittlebit.

Hi Whittlebit,

A Billikin (in my experience) is a post white contact Eskimo house god. Â*A short little fellow with a wide smile, big tummy and cute little toes. Â*I have carved several for my family. Â*I used to live in Fairbanks, Alaska, and he was a favorite of mine. Â*He is much like a small Budda, and brings luck to those who make wishes that bring no harm to another. Â*

My scanner is broken, but I could send you a picture of one I carved as well as a tiny walrus ivory one I keep for good luck.

Shirley
