Some of you may have seen some of the pictures I posted in the thread "torching wood"...well, here is the finished product. He's somewhere's between a Big Foot and King Kong. I must say, I can now appreciate how chainsaw carvers use a torch to burn wood as I failed miserably. I burned, brushed and sanded...and went through the process again. I finally gave up and sealed him, so here he is. He's carved in poplar and is over five feet tall. Now what am I going to do with a five foot Big Foot? Thanks to the carver who posted here earlier who inspired me to give it a try. Patrick |

I like it Patrick. The torching looks good to me. He has kind eyes. He also reminds me of Chewbacca from star wars .Star Wars. Andy |

I think he turned out great for your 1st. The moisture content of the wood has an effect on the burn, as does texture. It used to bug me that the high spots were darker than the low spots, then I started brushing across the grooves with a windshield brush. I sand smooth parts with an angle grinder for a more consistent burn. Growth rings pop out in conifer wood.Never used poplar, I heard it cracks bad. True?Maybe a wax job would warm him up a little. Now carve some feet and stick him in the bushes!

Well it sounds like that pretty face appeals to a few carvers - thanks everyone. That piece of poplar was definitely green so perhaps that's why I struggled so much with the torch. As for feet, I had that idea on the radar. I was going to carve out some toes peaking out of the bottom or shape the bottom as two large feet. If the face turned out better for me, I'd go through the trouble. Expect him in the mail any day Cliff. I wonder what your family will think of him on your door step Patrick |

Hi Patrick, I think you are being to hard on yourself, he is a big contrast from what you usually do,not affraid to take a chance at something different. Good Job. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Merle
