Ok guys, I have the real name and details on the stuff I found last week that I like better than Scotch Brite filament for defuzzing a carving. Â*The are Scotch-Brite Radial Bristle Discs. Â*The come in Â*grits of 36 brown, 50 green, 80 yellow, 120 white, 220 Red, 400 blue, and pumice pink, 6 micron peach, and 1 micron Lt. Green. Â*They also come in 9/16' diameter, 3/4', 1', 2', and 3'--all for progressively larger tools like a drill press or drill for the two largest sizes. Â*The shank sizes go from 3/32 to 1/4', respectively
The smaller numbered discs can really remove wood, so I probably wouldn't try it on a finished carving for defuzzing. Â*However, blue and red are pretty good at defuzzing, and even white for a harder wood than basswood would work. Â*The pumice and microns would probably be great for burnishing a stylized carving or metal. Â*
The little curved bristles have a new type of abrasive grit imbedded in them (cubitron and aluminum oxide) so they last lots longer than the old Scotch Brite. Â*You just stack 3-4 of them on a mandrel and go to it. (You gotta make sure you go with the curve of the little discs.) Â*Below is just one place I found them--check with your regular carving supplier. Â*It is shown in a recent Foredom NEWS publication.
