Your most affordable and easy to carve choice would be a 6x6 or 8x8 white pine timber. Both commonly used in timber frame construction. You could also simply acquire an eight foot pine log and bark it if you chose to carve in the round. I use Sikens Cetol to treat the posts that I carve for outdoor use,and have been very pleased with the results.
