What is the best...clear...long-lasting clear finish for a basswood carving that has no paint but some wood burning? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

well you will get a lot of opinions on this however if you want a true finish and not an oil then id recomend useing DEFT clear. as it will not yellow over time

Krylon makes and acrylic finish that will not yellow, dries fast and comes in matte or gloss. I got mine at Dick Blick's. I also use this over acrylic paints.

If you want a polyurethane finish, use the waterbased type in the blue can. It won't yellow like the oil based.

Whimsey, anytime you ask for advice on "best" xxxxx you will get a plethora of opinions. First decision is if it would contact food items. Any finish can be "best" depending on what you're using the piece for. Just my opinion, some may disagree. Steve
