beginner/ball and claw cane

Hello
I am mike valley and I just learned how to chip careve last year and am currently carving in the round. I carved a wood spirit as the head of a cane and carved some designs in the trunk of the cane. My son wants me to carve a ball and claw as the head and a dragon curling around the trunk. I am having a problem getting the ball and claw to come out right. What is the best way to start something like this?

Welcome aboard Mike. The ball and claw is a challenge, but once you see a model, it's easier I find. I went to a place that sells cheap nick-nacks for kids mostly (San Francisco I think the stores are called) and picked up a bowl with dragons on it, handles and lid. The lid had a great ball and claw top, works great to help you visualize.

I hope we get a look when you are finished.
