Default Base of carvings

Hi All, I guess this is where I should ask this question. In the works in progress I just finished my Indian lady and uploaded it to general carving. When I was finished with the figures I didn't know what to do with the base so I just laid it on my big belt sander and kind of smoothed it off. What types of base do you guys do? is there a forum on mounting figure carvings? Sorry I am new to this. Any suggestions or info please?
Thank You

The belt sander has always worked for me. I may carve the base but to get it flat nothing beats to sander.
