Default Bark house on shakey ground

A variation on a bark house. I personally like the grain in the wood and the effect Deft has on it when applied. This piece of bark proved to be especially hard and heavy. The grain was super tight, hence the beauty in the final cut.

How does one explain the density/weight/hardness difference from other bark pieces? Only rate of growth?

Smile Re: Bark house on shakey ground

I have carved alot of woodspirits in cottonwood bark and all the pieces of cottonwood are different. Depends sometime on the tree, where it is located, how long it has been on the downed tree etc. I have found out that the bark is the hardest when it comes off of a live tree, but it is very hard to get off, that is why I wait about three years after the tree has died. Now this goes for my part of the country, Alaska. I don't know where you get yours. Looks good, keep carving. Del

Thanks for the encouragement Bill. And Del, it is always amazing to me how different each piece of wood can be. Thanks for the feedback.
