Default Band saw conked out.

My band saw quit. Can anyone tell me how to check it out and be safe? Super Klutz around electric devices..German, 240 volts , a starting cap the size of a Russian WW2 hand grenade.Circuit breaker on, push start button and get a slight hum.Tried turning the wheels to change stop position, didn't do a thing. Was told that starter could wrap me around a beam without even trying. Thanks for any help you can give me.cordially Nad

Sounds like a bad capacitor to me too, Goody. Best to get that motor to a repair shop if you are not electric savy. Should be a reasonable fix. I'm not familiar with 240 volt motors so can't advise on replacing it yourself.

Good advice so far. Also check the brushes for wear.

The capacitor on the motor tells me its an induction type motor. This style of motor usally does not have brushes. Not much difference in the hookup of a single phase 220 volt motor and 110 volt single phase motor. 220 is phase to phase and 110 is phase to nuetral. Either way its still just a two wire hookup.

The Band saw is an Elektra Beckum type BAS450W,made about 1982? last digit on date was removed. ..That motor reminds me of the time I pulled the Engine ,transmission, and over drive from my Healey..Would it never end? .I'm going to call an electrician to take a look. I think the capacitor should be discharged, and the plug pulled before I start yanking on wires......1982 band saw, most of my tools 1800's,me, the wife and dog...the house, Nothing new around here, we're all old !!!

Saw back in business. Pulled the plug.Took the switch box off, had some sort of electromagnet in it, and full of dust..Blew the dust out,put it back,..Plugged saw in, and it ran....Good enough for me..I have the greatest respect for German engineering, and quality..

Wood dust can cause grief with elecrtric switchs and stuff, even more so if dampness is a problem.
